Context of Psalms 44:18
16This is because my cruel enemies are always insulting me. All they want is to hurt me. 17We have not turned away from you, but all this has happened to us. We have not turned against the covenant that you made with us. We have continued to serve you and obey your commands. 19But you have broken us in pieces. You have left us for wild dogs to eat. You have covered us with the darkness of death. 20We might have turned against you, our God, and worshipped a strange god.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Our heart is not turned back - That is, We have not turned away from thy service; we have not apostatized from thee; we have not fallen into idolatry. This must mean that such was not at that time the characteristic of the nation; it was not a prominent thing among the people; there was no such general and pervading iniquity as to explain the fact that these calamities had come upon them, or to be properly the cause of these troubles. Neither have our…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-26Verses 17-26 In afflictions, we must not seek relief by any sinful compliance; but should continually meditate on the truth, purity, and knowledge of our heart-searching God. Hearts sins and secret sins are known to God, and must be reckoned for. He knows the secret of the heart, therefore judges of the words and actions. While our troubles do not drive us from our duty to God, we should not suffer them to drive us from our comfort in God. Let us take…Read the comment
