Context of Psalms 146:5
3Do not trust in human leaders. No human can save you. 4When they die, they return to the ground. On that day, their plans come to an end. The person who knows that the God of Jacob will help him is a happy person! If he trusts in the Lord as his God, he is happy. 6The Lord made the skies, the earth and the sea. He also made everything that is in them. He always does what he has promised to do. 7He helps poor people to receive justice. He gives food to the hungry. He makes people that are in a prison go free.

Or, perhaps the word Jacob is used here collectively to denote Israel - the Jewish people: the God whom they adore and worship, rather than the gods of the pagan. Compare Psalm 144:15, note; Psalm 54:4, note. Whose hope is in the Lord his God - In Yahweh, worshipped as his God. That is, who truly worships Yahweh, or…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-10Verses 5-10 The psalmist encourages us to put confidence in God. We must hope in the providence of God for all we need as to this life, and in the grace of God for that which is to come. The God of heaven became a man that he might become our salvation. Though he died on the cross for our sins, and was laid in the grave, yet his thoughts of love to us did not perish; he rose again to fulfil them. When on earth, his miracles were examples of what he is…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-10The call to praise (Psalm 146:1–2) leads to a warning against foolishness and false confidence (146:3–4). The psalm ends with a blessing for everyone who places their hope in the Lord (Psalm 146:5–7).Read the comment
- Rashi on Tanakh · v. 5Praiseworthy is he in whose help is the God of Jacob, for the Holy One, blessed be He, promised him (Gen. 28:15): “Behold I am with you, and I shall guard You, etc., and I shall return you.” Now why is He praiseworthy? Because He made heaven and earth and the sea, and since all is His, He has the power to guard him on the sea and on dry land; but a mortal king, although he watches him on dry land, cannot watch him on the sea.Read the comment
