Context of Psalms 110:5
3When you go to fight your enemies, your people will be happy to fight beside you. As the sun rises on the day of battle, your young men will be there, on the hills round Zion. 4The Lord has made a strong promise. He will not change it. He has promised, ‘You will be a priest for ever, in the same way that Melchizedek was my priest.’ The Lord is standing at your right side. When he becomes angry, he will knock down kings! 6He will punish the nations, so that dead bodies cover the ground. He will destroy kings everywhere on the earth. 7He will drink from a stream at the side of the road. With new strength, he will lift up his head.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5The Lord at thy right hand - Here Venema thinks the Psalm speaks of David. As Jesus is at the right hand of God, so he will be at thy hand, giving thee all the support and comfort requisite. Shall strike through kings - As he did in the case of Abraham, Genesis 14:1-16, (for to this there seems to be an allusion), where he smote four kings, and filled the pits with the dead bodies of their troops. That the allusion is to the above transaction seems the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5The Lord at thy right hand - See the notes at Psalm 16:8. Shall strike through kings - The Hebrew word here rendered “shall strike,” - from מחץ mâchats - means “to shake, to agitate”; and then, “to shake in pieces, to dash in pieces, to crush”; and here it has the sense of dashing in pieces, smiting, wounding, crushing. The “kings” referred to are the enemies of God and the Messiah, and the idea is that all would be subdued before him; that he would set…Read the comment
