Context of Psalms 149:7
5The people who belong to God should be very happy, because he has made them great. They should always sing with joy, even when they lie on their beds at night. 6They should shout aloud to praise God, while they hold sharp swords in their hands. That is how they must fight against other nations, to punish them for their sins. 8They must tie up the foreign kings with chains, and put the rulers in prison. 9They must do that to punish their enemies in the way that is right. That is how God will cause his people to become great. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7To execute vengeance upon the heathen - To inflict punishment upon them as a recompence for their sins. The word pagan here means nations. The allusion is, doubtless, to those who had oppressed and injured the Hebrew people - perhaps referring to those who had destroyed the city and the temple at the time of the Babylonian captivity. They were now to receive the punishment due for the wrongs which they had done to the nation; a just recompence at the hand…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-9Verses 6-9 Some of God's servants of old were appointed to execute vengeance according to his word. They did not do it from personal revenge or earthly politics, but in obedience to God's command. And the honour intended for all the saints of God, consists in their triumphs over the enemies of their salvation. Christ never intended his gospel should be spread by fire and sword, or his righteousness by the wrath of man. But let the high praises of God be…Read the comment
