Context of Psalms 107:39
37They plant crops in their fields, and they plant vines to grow grapes. They have plenty of food to eat. 38He blesses them, so that they have many children. Their animals also grow in number. But they may become weak and few in number, because of cruel enemies who give them trouble. 40Then God causes the enemy's leaders to become ashamed. He makes them travel on roads that go nowhere. 41But for people who are poor and weak, he rescues them from their trouble. He gives them many children, so that they have big families.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39Again, they are minished - Sometimes by war, or pestilence, or famine. How minished and brought low was the country already spoken of, by the long and destructive war which began in 1775, and was not ended till 1783! And what desolations, minishings, and ruin have been brought on the fertile empires of Europe by the war which commenced in 1792, and did not end till 1814! And how many millions of lives have been sacrificed in it, and souls sent unprepared…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 39Again, they are minished - literally, “And they are made to decrease.” That is - all is in the hand of God. He rules and directs all things. If there is prosperity, it comes from him; if there are reverses, they occur under his hand. People are not always prosperous. There are changes, misfortunes, disappointments, sorrows. God so deals with the race as in the bests manner to secure the recognition of himself: not always sending prosperity, lest people…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-43Verses 33-43 What surprising changes are often made in the affairs of men! Let the present desolate state of Judea, and of other countries, explain this. If we look abroad in the world, we see many greatly increase, whose beginning was small. We see many who have thus suddenly risen, as suddenly brought to nothing. Worldly wealth is uncertain; often those who are filled with it, ere they are aware, lose it again. God has many ways of making men poor. The…Read the comment

He turneth rivers into a wilderness, &c.--God's providence is illustriously displayed in His influence on two great elements of human prosperity, the earth's productiveness and the powers of government. He punishes the wicked by destroying the sources of fertility, or, in mercy, gives fruitfulness to deserts, which become the homes of a busy and successful agricultural population. By a permitted misrule and tyranny, this scene of prosperity is…Read the comment
