Context of Jeremiah 51:33
31Now people run to send the news to the king of Babylon. They pass this message along the line: “The enemy has taken power over the whole city! 32They have guards to stop people escaping across the rivers. They have burned the reeds in the wet fields. All our soldiers are afraid.” The Lord Almighty, Israel's God, says this: Babylon is like a threshing floor that is ready for people to stamp on wheat. The harvest time will soon come! Then the enemy will cut down Babylon, and they will stamp all over it!’ 34‘King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has destroyed us with his army. He has made us weak and confused. He has eaten us like a hungry monster. He has filled himself with all our good things. Then he spat us out of his mouth.’ 35Zion's people then say to the Lord, ‘Please punish the people of Babylonia, because they did cruel things to us.’ Jerusalem's people say, ‘Pay back the people of Babylonia, because they killed our relatives.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33Translate, “The daughter of Babylon is as a threshing-floor at the time when it is trampled,” i. e., trodden hard in readiness for the threshing: “yet a little while and the harvest-time” shall come to her, i. e., overtake her. In the East, the grain when reaped is carried at once to the threshing-floor, a level spot carefully prepared beforehand, usually about 50 feet in diameter, and trampled hard. The grain after it has been beaten out by a sledge…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3333. like a threshing-floor, it is time to thresh her--rather, "like a threshing-floor at the time of threshing," or "at the time when it is trodden." The treading, or threshing, here put before the harvest, out of the natural order, because the prominent thought is the treading down or destruction of Babylon. In the East the treading out of the corn took place only at harvest-time. Babylon is like a threshing-floor not trodden for a long time; but the…Read the comment
