Context of Psalms 104:28
26Ships travel on the sea. You made the monster, Leviathan, to swim and to play in the sea. 27All these living things wait for you to give them their food when they need it. When you give it to them, they take it. You open your hand to feed them, and they have plenty of good things. 29When you turn away from them, they become very afraid. When you take away their breath, they die and they return to the dust. 30But when you breathe into anything, it receives life. In that way, you bring new life to the earth.

Commentaries on Psalms 104:28
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28That thou givest them they gather - All creatures are formed with such and such digestive organs, and the food proper for them is provided. Infinitely varied as are living creatures in their habits and internal economy, so are the aliments which God has caused the air, the earth, and the waters to produce. Thou openest thine hand - An allusion to the act of scattering grain among fowls.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28That thou givest them they gather - What thou dost place before them they collect. They have no resources of their own. They can invent nothing; they cannot vary their food by art, as man does; they cannot make use of reason, as man does, or of skill, in preparing it, to suit and pamper the appetite. It comes prepared for them direct from the hand of God. Thou openest thine hand - As one does who bestows a gift on another. The point in the passage is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-30Verses 19-30 We are to praise and magnify God for the constant succession of day and night. And see how those are like to the wild beasts, who wait for the twilight, and have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. Does God listen to the language of mere nature, even in ravenous creatures, and shall he not much more interpret favourably the language of grace in his own people, though weak and broken groanings which cannot be uttered? There is…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 27-3027-30. The entire dependence of this immense family on God is set forth. With Him, to kill or make alive is equally easy. To hide His face is to withdraw favor (Psa 13:1). By His spirit, or breath, or mere word, He gives life. It is His constant providence which repairs the wastes of time and disease.Read the comment
