Context of Mark 8:21
19Remember that I used five loaves of bread to feed 5,000 men. How many baskets did you fill with pieces of food that were left?’ ‘There were 12 baskets,’ they replied. 20Jesus asked them, ‘I also used seven loaves to feed 4,000 people. That time, how many baskets did you fill with pieces of food?’ ‘There were seven baskets,’ they replied. ‘You really should understand about me now,’ he said to them. 22Jesus and his disciples came to a village called Bethsaida. Some people led a blind man to Jesus. They asked Jesus to touch the man. 23Jesus took the blind man's hand and he led the man out of the village. Jesus put water from his own mouth on the man's eyes. And he put his hands on the man. ‘Can you see anything?’ Jesus asked.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 See this passage explained in Matthew 16:1-12. Mark 8:12 Sighed deeply in his spirit - His heart was deeply affected at their wickedness and hypocrisy. The word “spirit” here is taken as the seat of the emotions, passions, affections. He drew groans deeply from his breast. No sign be given - That is, no such sign as they asked, to wit, a sign “from heaven.” He said a sign should be given, the same as was furnished by Jonas, Matthew 16:4. But…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 Obstinate unbelief will have something to say, though ever so unreasonable. Christ refused to answer their demand. If they will not be convinced, they shall not. Alas! what cause we have to lament for those around us, who destroy themselves and others by their perverse and obstinate unbelief, and enmity to the gospel! When we forget the works of God, and distrust him, we should chide ourselves severely, as Christ here reproves his disciples…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21Do you still not understand?: This question suggests there will be a future time when they will truly understand. Mark's audience knew that the resurrection of Jesus would help the disciples understand the identity and power of Jesus (see, for example, Acts 4:23–31).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2121. How is it that ye do not understand?--"do not understand that the warning I gave you could not have been prompted by any such petty consideration as the want of loaves in your scrip." Profuse as were our Lord's miracles, we see from this that they were not wrought at random, but that He carefully noted their minutest details, and desired that this should be done by those who witnessed, as doubtless by all who read the record of them. Even the…Read the comment
