Context of Luke 21:5
3‘Let me tell you this,’ Jesus said. ‘This poor woman has put a better gift into the box than all the other people have put in there. 4All those rich people have plenty of money. They only gave a small part of that. But this woman has almost nothing. She put everything that she had into the box. That money was what she needed to live.’ Some of Jesus' disciples were talking about the temple. They spoke about the many beautiful stones in the walls. They also spoke about the many gifts to God that people had put there. 6Jesus said to them, ‘You can see all these beautiful things now. But a day is coming when enemies will completely destroy it all. Not even one stone will remain on top of another stone.’ 7‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘When will all these things happen? What will show us that they will soon happen?’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Goodly stones - Or, costly stones. It has been thought by some that this relates not so much to the stones of which the temple was built, as to the precious stones with which it was decorated. For an account of the stones of the temple, see on Mark 13:1; (note). And gifts - Or, consecrated things, . properly signifies a thing consecrated to sacred uses: signifies a thing devoted to a curse, or to destruction. They both come from the same root, , I lay up…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Goodly stones - Beautiful stones. Either referring to the large, square, and well-finished stones of which the eastern wall was built, or to the precious stones which might have been used in decorating the temple itself. See the notes at Mark 13:1. Gifts - This word properly denotes anything devoted or dedicated to God. Anciently warriors dedicated to their gods the spoils of war - the shields, and helmets, and armor, and garments of those slain in…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-28Verses 5-28 With much curiosity those about Christ ask as to the time when the great desolation should be. He answers with clearness and fulness, as far as was necessary to teach them their duty; for all knowledge is desirable as far as it is in order to practice. Though spiritual judgements are the most common in gospel times, yet God makes use of temporal judgments also. Christ tells them what hard things they should suffer for his name's sake, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5adorned with beautiful stones: Herod the Great rebuilt and restored the temple in Jerusalem, producing one of the great structures of the ancient world. According to the historian Josephus, the massive white stones reflected the sun with such brilliance that from a distance the temple looked like snow-covered mountains (War 5.5.6).
