Context of Leviticus 10:16
14You and your sons and daughters can eat the meat of the ribs that you held up to God. And all your family can eat the top part of the leg. Eat the meat in a place that is clean and ready for God's use. It is your part of the people's friendship offering. 15Bring the top of the leg and the meat of the ribs. Lift them up to the Lord. The Lord has given them to you and to your children. Lift them up with the fat parts of the burnt offering. He told you that you should do this.’ Moses looked for the goat that was to atone for the people's sin. Moses was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, sons of Aaron. He was angry because they had burnt the goat. 17Moses said to them, ‘This gift was for the Lord. It was a very holy gift. It was to atone for the people's sins. Why did you not take it to the holy place and eat it? 18You did not bring the blood into the holy place. I told you that you must eat its meat in the Tent of Meeting.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Moses diligently sought the goat - The goat which was offered the same day for the sins of the priests and the people, (see Leviticus 9:15, Leviticus 9:16;), and which, through the confusion that happened on account of the death of Nadab and Abihu, was burnt instead of being eaten. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16The Law on the point in question was clear. See Leviticus 2:3, note; Leviticus 4:5, note; Leviticus 4:15 note. But on this occasion, though the sin-offering which had been offered by Aaron was for the people Leviticus 9:15, its blood was not carried into the tabernacle. The priests might therefore have too readily supposed that their eating the flesh, or burning it, was a matter of indifference. Hence, Moses explains that the appropriation of the flesh by…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-20Verses 12-20 Afflictions should rather quicken us to our duty, than take us from it. But our unfitness for duty, when it is natural and not sinful, will have great allowances made for it; God will have mercy, and not sacrifice. Let us profit by the solemn warning this history conveys. When professing worshippers come with zeal without knowledge, carnal affections, earthly, light, vain, trifling thoughts, the devices of will-worship, instead of the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-17The goat of the sin offering was the offering for the people (Leviticus 9:3, 15–17; compare 9:2, 8–11). On this special occasion, the priests did not take the blood into the Holy Place as usually required. After offering the parts meant for God, the priests should have eaten the remaining portion (see 6:29). But they burned the entire goat, even though its blood had not entered the sanctuary (10:18; see 6:30).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 16-2016-20. Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt--In a sacrifice presented, as that had been, on behalf of the people, it was the duty of the priests, as typically representing them and bearing their sins, to have eaten the flesh after the blood had been sprinkled upon the altar. Instead of using it, however, for a sacred feast, they had burnt it without the camp; and Moses, who discovered this departure from the…Read the comment
