Context of Lamentations 5:6
4We must pay money for the water that we drink. We must buy wood for our fires. 5Our enemies cause us to work like animals. But the work is too difficult and they will not let us rest. We gave ourselves to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians, so that we could get food to eat. 7Our ancestors sinned, but they are dead. Now we have the troubles that you caused because of them. You punished us because of their sin. 8Slaves now rule us. And there is nobody to save us from their power.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6We have given the hand to the Egyptians - We have sought alliances both with the Egyptians and Assyrians, and made covenants with them in order to get the necessaries of life. Or, wherever we are now driven, we are obliged to submit to the people of the countries in order to the preservation of our lives.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6“To give the hand” means to submit oneself. Absolutely it was Babylon that had just destroyed their national existence, but Jeremiah means that all feelings of patriotism were crushed, and the sole care that remained was the desire for personal preservation. To secure this the people would readily have submitted to the yoke either of Egypt or Assyria, the great powers from which in their past history they had so often suffered.Read the comment
