Context of Judges 5:11
9I thank God for Israel's leaders, and the people who are ready to fight our enemies. Praise the Lord! 10Listen to me, you rich people who ride on white donkeys, with beautiful cloths to sit on. And you people who walk along the road, you should listen too! Listen to the voices of the singers near the wells of water. They sing about the great things that the Lord has done. They tell how Israel's soldiers have won against their enemies. Then the Lord's people marched down to the city gates. 12“Wake up, Deborah! Wake up and sing a song! Get up, Barak, son of Abinoam! Take your enemies away as your prisoners.” 13The faithful men who remained returned to their leaders. The Lord's people came to me. They were ready to fight against our enemies.

Commentaries on Judges 5:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11In the places of drawing water - As wells were very scarce in every part of the East, and travelers in such hot countries must have water, robbers and banditti generally took their stations near tanks, pools, and springs, in order that they might suddenly fall upon those who came to drink; and when the country was badly governed, annoyances of this kind were very frequent. The victory gained now by the Israelites put the whole country under their own…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11The sense of the King James Version is that, whereas formerly they could not go in safety to draw water from their wells, but were shot at by the archers of the enemy, now they were delivered from such tumults; and standing round the wells in security rehearsed the righteous acts of the Lord in delivering them, and “the righteous acts of His government in Israel.” (See Judges 5:7). Then shall the people of the Lord go down to the gates - Israelites, who…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-11Verses 6-11 Deborah describes the distressed state of Israel under the tyranny of Jabin, that their salvation might appear more gracious. Deborah was a mother to Israel, by diligently promoting the salvation of their souls. She calls on those who shared the advantages of this great salvation, to offer…Read the comment

But in peace they are scenes of pleasant and joyous resort. The poetess anticipates that this song may be sung, and the righteous acts of the Lord rehearsed at these now tranquil "places of drawing water." Deborah now rouses herself to describe, in terms suitable to the occasion, the preparation and the contest, and calls in a flight of…Read the comment
