Context of Joel 2:25
23Shout with joy, people in Zion! Be very happy because of the things that the Lord your God has done. He has given you just enough autumn rain. He has given you the winter rain, and the summer rain, as before. 24He will fill your stores with seeds to make bread. And he will fill your jars with new wine and oil. ‘I will give you back the years that the locusts have eaten. I will give you all that the great locust and the young locust, and other locusts and their groups have eaten. All that my great army has eaten I will give you. 26You will have plenty to eat. You will be full. You will praise the name of the Lord your God. He has done great things for you. My people will never again be ashamed. 27Then you will know that I am in Israel. You will know that I am the Lord your God. And you will know that there is no other God. My people will never again be ashamed.’

Commentaries on Joel 2:25
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25I will restore - the years - It has already been remarked that the locusts not only destroyed the produce of that year, but so completely ate up all buds, and barked the trees, that they did not recover for some years. Here God promises that he would either prevent or remedy that evil; for he would restore the years that the locusts, cankerworm, caterpillar, and palmerworm had eaten.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten - The order in which these destroyers are named not being the same as before, it is plain that the stress is not on the order, but on the successiveness of the inroads, scourge after scourge. It is plain too that they did not come in the same year, or two years, but year after year, for he says, not “year,” but in the plural, “years.” The locusts, although not the whole plague, intended, are…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-27Verses 15-27 The priests and rulers are to appoint a solemn fast. The sinner's supplication is, Spare us, good Lord. God is ready to succour his people; and he waits to be gracious. They prayed that God would spare them, and he answered them. His promises are real answers to the prayers of faith; with him saying and doing are not two things. Some understand these promises figuratively, as pointing to gospel grace, and as fulfilled in the abundant comforts…Read the comment
