Context of Joel 1:10
8Cry like a girl that no man ever loved. She is crying because her promised husband is dead. 9There will be no more gifts of food or drink. They will not reach the house of the Lord. The priests, the servants of the Lord, are very, very sad. Nobody can use the fields. They are all dry. The new wine has all gone. The oil has all gone. 11You farmers, you cry. You who grow vines, cry. Be sad for the seeds that are food. Be sad because the fields are dry. And the plants have died. 12The vine has become dry, and the fig tree is dead. The apple trees and other fruit trees, all the trees have no more fruit. Men have no more joy. It has all gone.

Commentaries on Joel 1:10
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10The field is wasted, the land mourneth - As, when God pours out His blessings of nature, all nature seems to smile and be glad, and as the Psalmist says, “to shout for joy and sing” Psalm 65:13, so when He withholds them, it seems to mourn, and, by its mourning, to reproach the insensibility of man. Oil is the emblem of the abundant graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit, and of the light and devotion of soul given by Him, and spiritual gladness, and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 All who labour only for the meat that perishes, will, sooner or later, be ashamed of their labour. Those that place their happiness in the delights of sense, when deprived of them, or disturbed in the enjoyment, lose their joy; whereas spiritual joy then flourishes more than ever. See what perishing, uncertain things our creature-comforts are. See how we need to live in continual dependence upon God and his providence. See what ruinous work…Read the comment
