Context of Job 29:23
21People waited patiently to hear to my advice. They listened carefully to what I said. 22After I had spoken, they did not say any more. They listened to every word and they thought about it. They would wait for me to speak to them, like people who wait for rain to fall. My words would make them happy, like rain in spring that makes a farmer happy. 24They were surprised when I smiled at them. My smile made them happy. 25As their leader, I told them what they should do. I was like a king who leads his soldiers. When they were sad, I would comfort them.’

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-25Verses 18-25 Being thus honoured and useful, Job had hoped to die in peace and honour, in a good old age. If such an expectation arise from lively faith in the providence and promise of God, it is well; but if from conceit of our own wisdom, and dependence on changeable, earthly things, it is ill grounded, and turns to sin. Every one that has the spirit of wisdom, has not the spirit of government; but Job had both. Yet he had the tenderness of a…Read the comment
