Context of Job 19:27
25As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives. I know that, in the end, he will stand on the earth. 26Illness may completely destroy my skin. But after that happens, I know that in this body I will see God. I will see him for myself, with my own eyes. It makes me feel weak inside as I think about it! 28My friends, you should not think of ways to make me suffer even more. You say that I have caused my own trouble. 29Instead, you yourselves should be afraid of punishment! When God is angry with someone, he punishes that person. Then you will know that he is the one who judges people.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27Whom I shall see for myself - Have a personal interest in the resurrection, as I shall have in the Redeemer. And mine eyes shall behold - That very person who shall be the resurrection, as he is the life. And not another - זר ולא velo zar, and not a stranger, one who has no relation to human nature; but גאלי goali, my redeeming Kinsman. Though my reins be consumed within me - Though I am now apparently on the brink of death, the thread of life being spun…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27Whom I shall see for myself - It will not come to be by mere report. I shall not merely hear of the decision of God in my favor, but I shall myself behold him. He will at length come forth, and I shall be permitted to see him, and shall have the delightful assurance that he settles this controversy in my favor, and declares that I am his friend. Job was thus permitted to see God Job 42:5, and hear his voice in his favor. He spake to him from the whirlwind…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-29Verses 23-29 The Spirit of God, at this time, seems to have powerfully wrought on the mind of Job. Here he witnessed a good confession; declared the soundness of his faith, and the assurance of his hope. Here is much of Christ and heaven; and he that said such things are these, declared plainly that he sought the better country, that is, the heavenly. Job was taught of God to believe in a living Redeemer; to look for the resurrection of the dead, and the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27I will see Him for myself: This thought is like the psalmist's in "when I awake" (Psalm 17:15). For Job, this hope could only come true by seeing God at the end of time when his body transformed (Matthew 5:8; 1 Corinthians 13:12; 1 John 3:2; Revelation 1:7; 1 Corinthians 15:43–53; Philippians 3:21).Read the comment
