Context of Job 12:10
8Speak to the earth and it will teach you. The fish in the sea would tell you what is right. 9Any of them could tell you that the Lord has done this. He has authority over the life of all the animals. He gives breath to all people so that they can live. 11We use our mouths to taste food. And we use our ears to test what we hear. 12Old people are often wise. People who have lived for a long time understand things better.

- Daniel 5:23You thought that you were greater than the Lord of heaven. So you told your servants to bring the valuable cups that belong to God's temple. Those are idols that cannot see or hear. They cannot understand anything. But you worshipped them instead of the true God. He is the God who gives life to you. He has power over everything that you do.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10In whose hand is the soul of every living thing - חי כל נפש nephesh col chai, "the soul of all life." And the breath of all mankind - בשר כל ורוח veruach col besar, "and the spirit or breath of all flesh." Does not the first refer to the immortal soul, the principle of all intellectual life; and the latter to the breath, respiration, the grand means by which animal existence is continued? - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10In whose hand is the soul of every living thing - Margin, “Life.” The margin is the more correct rendering. The idea is, that all are under the control of God. He gives life, and health, and happiness when he pleases, and when he chooses he takes them away. His sovereignty is manifested, says Job, in the inferior creation, or among the beasts of the field, the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of heaven. And the breath of all mankind - Margin, “Flesh of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-11Verses 6-11 Job appeals to facts. The most audacious robbers, oppressors, and impious wretches, often prosper. Yet this is not by fortune or chance; the Lord orders these things. Worldly prosperity is of small value in his sight: he has better things for his children. Job resolves all into the absolute proprietorship which God has in all the creatures. He demands from his friends liberty to judge of what they had said; he appeals to any fair judgment…Read the comment
