Context of Isaiah 14:15
13You said to yourself, “I will go up into heaven. I will put my throne above the stars of God. I will rule as king on the mountain in the far north, where the gods of the nations meet together. 14I will go up above the tops of the clouds. I will become like the Most High God.” But instead of that, you have come down into the deep hole of death. You have fallen to the deepest place under the earth. 16In that deep place, people will look at you carefully. They will be very surprised. They will think, “This is the man who caused the earth to shake. He caused kingdoms to shake with fear. Is that really true? 17Is this really the man who made the world become like a desert? He destroyed its cities. He did not let his prisoners go back to their homes.”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell - Hebrew, To sheol‘ (compare Isaiah 14:9). To the sides of the pit - The word pit,‘ here, is evidently synonymous with “hell” or “hades,” represented as a deep, dark region under ground. The dead were often buried in caves, and the descent was often dark and dreary, to the vaults where they reposed. Hence, it is always represented as going down; or, as the “inferior” regions. The sides of the pit‘ here stand opposed…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1515. to hell--to Sheol (Is 14:6), thou who hast said, "I will ascend into heaven" (Mt 11:23). sides of the pit--antithetical to the "sides of the north" (Is 14:13). Thus the reference is to the sides of the sepulcher round which the dead were arranged in niches. But Maurer here, as in Is 14:13, translates, "the extreme," or innermost parts of the sepulchre: as in Eze 32:23 (compare 1Sa 24:3).Read the comment
