Context of Hosea 4:9
7The more priests that there are among you, the more sins they do against me. They should have received honour as priests, but I will make them ashamed. 8They get food to eat when the people bring their sin offerings to them. So the priests are happy when the people do bad things, because they get more food to eat. The people do whatever the priests do. I will punish them all for the bad things that they do. I will give them what their sins deserve. 10They will eat, but they will still be hungry. They will have sex with prostitutes, but they will still have no children. This will happen because they have turned away from the Lord. 11Instead, they worship other gods. My people cannot think properly because they drink too much old wine and new wine.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And there shall be like people, like priest - Priest and people were alike in sin. Yea they are wont, if bad, to foment each other‘s sin. The bad priest copies the sins which he should reprove, and excuses himself by the frailty of our common nature. The people, acutely enough, detect the worldliness or self-indulgence of the priest, and shelter themselves under his example. Their defense stands good before people; but what before God? Alike in sin…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-11Verses 6-11 Both priests and people rejected knowledge; God will justly reject them. They forgot the law of God, neither desired nor endeavoured to retain it in mind, and to transmit the remembrance to their posterity; therefore God will justly forget them and their children. If we dishonour God with that which is our honour, it will, sooner or later, be turned into shame to us. Instead of warning the people against sin, from the consideration of the…Read the comment
