Context of Hosea 13:9
7So I will attack them like a lion. I will be like a leopard that waits beside the road. It is ready to catch anything that goes that way. 8I will attack them like an angry bear that has lost her children. I will tear them into pieces. I will eat them like a hungry lion. I will attack them and kill them, like a wild animal. I will destroy you, Israel. There will be nobody to help you. 10What has happened to your king? He cannot save you! Where are your rulers? You asked me to give you rulers like the other nations have. You said, “Give us a king and rulers.” 11I was angry, but I agreed to give you a king. Now I am even more angry and I will take your king away!

Commentaries on Hosea 13:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself - These evils come not by my immediate infliction; they are the consequences of thy own crimes. In the above terrifying figures of the ferocious beasts, the prophet only shows what they would meet with from the hand of the Assyrians in the war, the famine, and the captivity; God being represented as doing what he only permits to be done. But in me is thine help - "Though thou hast destroyed thyself, yet in me alone…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself, but in Me is thy help - This is one of the concise sayings of Hosea, which is capable of many shades of meaning. The five words, one by one, are literally, “Israel, thy destruction, for” or “that, in” or “against Me, in” or “against thy help.” Something must be supplied any way; the simplest seems; “O Israel, thy destruction” is, “that” thou hast been, hast rebelled “against Me, against thy help”. Yet, in whatever…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-16Verses 9-16 Israel had destroyed himself by his rebellion; but he could not save himself, his help was from the Lord only. This may well be applied to the case of spiritual redemption, from that lost state into which all have fallen by wilful sins. God often gives in displeasure what we sinfully desire. It is the happiness of the saints, that, whether God gives or takes away, all is in love. But it is the misery of the wicked, that, whether God gives or…Read the comment
