Context of Genesis 32:31
29Then Jacob said, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But the man said, ‘Why do you want to know my name?’ Then he blessed Jacob in that place. 30So Jacob called the place Peniel. He said, ‘I have seen God face to face, and I am still alive!’ The sun rose in the sky as Jacob passed through Peniel. He could not walk properly because of his hip. 32Even today, the Israelite people do not eat the meat of an animal where it joins to the hip. This is because God touched Jacob's hip.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 31The sun rose upon him - Did the Prophet Malachi refer to this, Malachi 4:2; : Unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings? Possibly with the rising of the sun, which may here be understood as emblematical of the Sun of righteousness - the Lord Jesus, the pain and weakness of his thigh passed away, and he felt both in soul and body that he was healed of his plagues.Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 24-32Verses 24-32 A great while before day, Jacob being alone, more fully spread his fears before God in prayer. While thus employed, One in the likeness of a man wrestled with him. When the spirit helpeth our infirmities, and our earnest and vast desires can scarcely find words to utter them, and we still mean more than we can express, then prayer is indeed wrestling with God. However tried or discouraged, we shall prevail; and prevailing with Him in prayer…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31God injured Jacob’s hip. This limited Jacob’s pride and self-reliance (depending on his own strength). Because God reduced his natural strength, Jacob had to trust the Lord more. Jacob thought he could return to his land by outsmarting his brother again (32:3–21). But at the border of the land, he met its true owner. He would receive the land, but only if God fought for him. Self-reliance (trying to gain God’s blessing by our own strength or by worldly…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3131. halted upon his thigh--As Paul had a thorn in the flesh given to humble him, lest he should be too elevated by the abundant revelations granted him [2Co 12:7], so Jacob's lameness was to keep him mindful of this mysterious scene, and that it was in gracious condescension the victory was yielded to him. In the greatest of these spiritual victories which, through faith, any of God's people obtain, there is always something to humble them.Read the comment
