Context of Genesis 3:8
6The woman looked at the fruit on the tree. She saw that it would be good to eat, and it was beautiful to look at. She wanted to eat it because it would make her become wise. So she took some fruit and she ate it. Then she gave some of the fruit to her husband who was with her. He also ate it. 7Then they understood what they had done. They realized that they were not wearing any clothes. So they took some leaves from fig trees. They tied them together to cover their bodies. In the evening there was a nice cool wind. The Lord God walked in the garden. The man and the woman heard the sound of the Lord God. They hid themselves behind some trees, so that God would not see them. 9The Lord God called out to the man. He said to him, ‘Where are you?’ 10The man replied, ‘I heard you in the garden. I was afraid because I had no clothes. So I hid myself from you.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8The voice of the Lord - The voice is properly used here, for as God is an infinite Spirit, and cannot be confined to any form, so he can have no personal appearance. It is very likely that God used to converse with them in the garden, and that the usual time was the decline of the day, היום לרוח leruach haiyom, in the evening breeze; and probably this was the time that our first parents employed in the more solemn acts of their religious worship, at which…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8in the garden in the breeze of the day: Traditionally, the Hebrew text refers to the cool part of the day, probably the evening. Some believe it describes a powerful appearance of God's presence (a theophany; see Exodus 19:16–25; 1 Samuel 7:10) as a storm. If this is true, the man and woman hid from the sound of the Lord appearing in judgment (see 2 Samuel 5:24; Psalm 29). God placed the trees of the garden for humans to enjoy fellowship with him. Now…Read the comment
