Context of Genesis 25:34
32Esau said, ‘Look, I am so hungry that I will die. Then my birthright will not help me at all!’ 33Jacob said, ‘First, make a serious promise to me.’ So Esau promised to sell his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and the soup made from grains. Esau ate the food and he drank. Then he got up and he left. In that way, Esau showed that he did not think that his birthright was important.

Commentaries on Genesis 25:34
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 34Pottage of lentils - See note Genesis 25:29. Thus Esau despised his birthright - On this account the apostle, Hebrews 12:16, calls Esau a profane person, because he had, by this act, alienated from himself and family those spiritual offices connected with the rights of primogeniture. While we condemn Esau for this bad action, (for he should rather have perished than have alienated this right), and while we consider it as a proof that his mind was little…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-34Verses 29-34 We have here the bargain made between Jacob and Esau about the right, which was Esau's by birth, but Jacob's by promise. It was for a spiritual privilege; and we see Jacob's desire of the birth-right, but he sought to obtain it by crooked courses, not like his character as a plain man. He was right, that he coveted earnestly the best gifts; he was wrong, that he took advantage of his brother's need. The inheritance of their father's worldly…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33-34Esau quickly accepted what Jacob offered and fell into his trap. He ate and left so quickly that he could not have been close to death (25:32). The final comment in the passage explains that Esau treated his birthright with contempt, as if it had no value (Hebrews 12:16). It is foolish to give up spiritual blessings just to satisfy physical desires (compare Genesis 3:6).Read the comment
