Context of Genesis 2:11
9The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground there. The trees were beautiful to look at. The fruit from the trees was good for people to eat. In the middle of the garden were two special trees. One was the tree that gives life. The other was the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is evil. 10A river began in Eden. It went through the garden and it gave water for the ground. After that, it became four separate rivers. The name of the first river is the Pishon. It goes through the whole land of Havilah. There is gold in that land. 12The gold there is very good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also in Havilah. 13The name of the second river is the Gihon. It goes through the whole land of Cush.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The place fixed upon for Adam to dwell in, was not a palace, but a garden. The better we take up with plain things, and the less we seek things to gratify pride and luxury, the nearer we approach to innocency. Nature is content with a little, and that which is most natural; grace with less; but lust craves every thing, and is content with nothing. No delights can be satisfying to the soul, but those which God himself has provided and appointed…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11The Pishon and the Gihon (2:13) cannot be identified with certainty. If the land of Havilah was in southeast Arabia or on the African coast, as some biblical data suggest (see 10:7; 25:18; 1 Samuel 15:7), then the Pishon was possibly the Nile River. The Jewish historian Josephus thought that Havilah and the Pishon were in India (Antiquities 1.1.3). Two other ideas suggest the Pishon and Gihon might be: rivers in the mountains of eastern Turkey, where the…Read the comment
