Context of Genesis 2:11
9Then Adonai Elohim caused to sprout from the ground every tree that was desirable to look at and good for food. Now the Tree of Life was in the middle of the garden, and also the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. 10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became four riverheads. The name of the first is Pishon, the one that winds around the whole land of the Havilah, where there is gold. 12The gold of that land is good—bdellium and lapis lazuli stones are also there. 13The name of the second river is Gihon—it winds around the whole land of Cush.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-14Verses 8-14 The place fixed upon for Adam to dwell in, was not a palace, but a garden. The better we take up with plain things, and the less we seek things to gratify pride and luxury, the nearer we approach to innocency. Nature is content with a little, and that which is most natural; grace with less; but lust craves every thing, and is content with nothing. No delights can be satisfying to the soul, but those which God himself has provided and appointed…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11The Pishon and the Gihon (2:13) cannot be identified with certainty. If the land of Havilah was in southeast Arabia or on the African coast, as some biblical data suggest (see 10:7; 25:18; 1 Samuel 15:7), then the Pishon was possibly the Nile River. The Jewish historian Josephus thought that Havilah and the Pishon were in India (Antiquities 1.1.3). Two other ideas suggest the Pishon and Gihon might be: rivers in the mountains of eastern Turkey, where the…Read the comment
