Context of Exodus 15:3
1Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to praise the Lord: ‘I will sing to the Lord, because he has shown his great power. He threw horses and their riders into the sea. 2The Lord makes me strong. He is the reason for my song. He is the one who has saved me. He is my God and I will praise him. He is my father's God and I will praise his name. The Lord is like a brave soldier. The Lord is his name. 4He threw Pharaoh's chariots and his army into the sea. Pharaoh's best officers drowned in the Red Sea. 5The deep waters have covered them. They fell to the floor of the sea, like a stone.

Commentaries on Exodus 15:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3The Lord is a man of war - Perhaps it would be better to translate the words, Jehovah is the man or hero of the battle. As we scarcely ever apply the term to any thing but first-rate armed vessels, the change of the translation seems indispensable, though the common rendering is literal enough. Besides, the object of Moses was to show that man had no part in this victory, but that the whole was wrought by the miraculous power of God, and that therefore he…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-18Verses 1-18 With the deliverance of Israel is associated the development of the national poetry, which finds its first and perfect expression in this magnificent hymn. It was sung by Moses and the people, an expression which evidently points to him as the author. That it was written at the time is an assertion expressly made in the text, and it is supported by the strongest internal evidence. In every age this song gave the tone to the poetry of Israel…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-271. Then sang Moses and the children of Israel--The scene of this thanksgiving song is supposed to have been at the landing place on the eastern shore of the Red Sea, at Ayoun Musa, "the fountains of Moses." They are situated somewhat farther northward along the shore than the opposite point from which the Israelites set out. But the line of the people would be extended during the passage, and one extremity of it would reach as far north as these…Read the comment
