Context of Exodus 12:40
38Many other people also travelled with them. They had a very large number of sheep, goats and cows. 39The Israelites cooked the bread that they had brought with them from Egypt. It had no yeast in it, because they had to leave Egypt quickly. The Egyptians did not let them wait. So the Israelites did not have time to prepare any food for themselves. The Israelites had lived in Egypt for 430 years. 41It was on the last day of the 430 years that all the Lord's people left Egypt. They left in family groups, like an army. 42The Lord carefully watched his people all that night, when he brought them out of Egypt. Because of that, all Israelites must watch carefully during this special night. They and their descendants must do this every year, to thank the Lord.

- Galatians 3:17What I mean is this: God made an agreement with Abraham. He promised to bless him. Then, 430 years later, God gave his Law to Moses for the Jewish people. But that Law could not take away the authority of God's agreement with Abraham. It could not stop what God had already promised.
- Acts 13:17The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors to be his people. While they lived in Egypt, God caused his people to become a very large group. They lived as foreign people in Egypt. But God used his great power to bring them out from that country.
- Hebrews 11:9Because of his faith, Abraham went to live like a stranger in that foreign country. God had promised to give that country to him, but Abraham lived there in tents. Isaac and Jacob also lived there in tents like strangers. God had also promised them that the land would belong to them one day.
- Genesis 12:1The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country and the people of your father's family. Go to the land that I will show you.

- Galatians 3:16In the same way, God promised to bless Abraham and Abraham's descendant. The Bible does not say ‘descendants’. It does not speak about ‘many people’. No, God promised to bless Abraham's descendant. He speaks about one person, and that person is Christ.
Commentaries on Exodus 12:40
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, etc. - The statement in this verse is allowed on all hands to be extremely difficult, and therefore the passage stands in especial need of illustration. "That the descendants of Israel did not dwell 430 years in Egypt," says Dr. Kennicott, "may be easily proved, and has often been demonstrated. Some therefore imagine that by Egypt here both it and Canaan are to be understood. But this greater latitude of place…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 37-42Verses 37-42 The children of Israel set forward without delay. A mixed multitude went with them. Some, perhaps, willing to leave their country, laid waste by plagues; others, out of curiosity; perhaps a few out of love to them and their religion. But there were always those among the Israelites who were not Israelites. Thus there are still hypocrites in the church. This great event was 430 years from the promise made to Abraham: see Ga 3:17. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 40According to the Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch, the 430 years span from the promise to Abraham until the exodus from Egypt (Genesis 12; 15). Compare Galatians 3:17; see also Exodus Book Introduction, The Date of the Exodus.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4040. the sojourning of the children of Israel ... four hundred and thirty years--The Septuagint renders it thus: "The sojourning of the children and of their fathers, which they sojourned in the land of Canaan and in the land of Egypt." These additions are important, for the period of sojourn in Egypt did not exceed two hundred fifteen years; but if we reckon from the time that Abraham entered Canaan and the promise was made in which the sojourn of his…Read the comment
