Context of Exodus 10:19
17Please forgive my sins just one more time. Ask the Lord your God to remove this punishment of death from me.’ 18Moses left Pharaoh and he prayed to the Lord. Then the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind. This wind lifted the locusts up and it blew them away into the Red Sea. Not one locust remained in all the country of Egypt. 20But the Lord caused Pharaoh's mind to become hard again. Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go. 21Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Lift up your hand towards the sky. Then it will become dark over the whole country of Egypt. It will be so dark that people will be able to feel it.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19A mighty strong west wind - ים רוח ruach yam, literally the wind of the sea; the wind that blew from the Mediterranean Sea, which lay north-west of Egypt, which had the Red Sea on the east. Here again God works by natural means; he brought the locusts by the east wind, and took them away by the west or north-west wind, which carried them to the Red Sea where they were drowned. The Red Sea - סוף ים yam suph, the weedy sea; so called, as some suppose, from…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19West wind - Literally, “a sea wind,” a wind blowing from the sea on the northwest of Egypt. Red sea - The Hebrew has the “Sea of Suph”: the exact meaning of which is disputed. Gesenius renders it “rush” or “seaweed;” but it is probably an Egyptian word. A sea-weed resembling wood is thrown up abundantly on the shores of the Red Sea. The origin of the name “Red” Sea is uncertain: (naturalists have connected it with the presence of red infusoria, Exodus…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-20Verses 12-20 God bids Moses stretch out his hand; locusts came at the call. An army might more easily have been resisted than this host of insects. Who then is able to stand before the great God? They covered the face of the earth, and ate up the fruit of it. Herbs grow for the service of man; yet when God pleases, insects shall plunder him, and eat the bread out of his mouth. Let our labour be, not for the habitation and meat thus exposed, but for those…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-20The eighth plague was the plague of locusts (10:4). Enough time had passed since the previous plague for the wheat and spelt to sprout (see 9:32). The Egyptian god Osiris was highly honored by the people in Egypt. Egyptians believed he went down into the underworld and brought plant life back in the spring. For them, he was connected with renewal and life after death. This second and climactic attack on plant life showed that even Osiris had no power…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1913-19. the Lord brought an east wind--The rod of Moses was again raised, and the locusts came. They are natives of the desert and are only brought by an east wind into Egypt, where they sometimes come in sun-obscuring clouds, destroying in a few days every green blade in the track they traverse. Man, with all his contrivances, can do nothing to protect himself from the overwhelming invasion. Egypt has often suffered from locusts. But the plague that…Read the comment
