Context of Daniel 11:20
18After this, he will decide to attack the countries near the sea. He will take many of their cities for himself. But an officer of a foreign army will stop him. He will cause the king of the north to stop boasting. He will no longer be proud but he will be ashamed. 19So the king of the north will return to the strong cities in his own country. But he will lose his power and he will fall. Nobody will ever see him again. Then another king will rule in the north. He will try to make his kingdom even greater. He will send out a cruel man to take taxes from people. But that king will soon die. This will not happen in a battle or because people are angry with him. 21The king who rules after him will be an evil man. He will not belong to the royal family, so he should not be the king. He will deceive people to make himself the king. It will happen at a time when people think that they are safe. 22He will quickly destroy any army that tries to attack him. He will even kill the leader of God's covenant.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes - Seleucus Philopater succeeded his father Antiochus. He sent his treasurer Heliodorus to seize the money deposited in the temple of Jerusalem, which is here called the glory of the kingdom, see 2 Maccabees 9:23. He was so cramped to pay the annual tax to the Romans, that he was obliged to burden his subjects with continual taxes. He shall be destroyed, neither in anger - fighting against an enemy, nor…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Then shall stand up in his estate - Margin, “or, place.” The word used - כן kên - means, properly, “a stand, station, place” (see the notes at Daniel 11:7), and the idea here is simply that he would be succeeded in the kingdom by such an one. His successor would have the character and destiny which the prophecy proceeds to specify. A raiser of taxes - One who shall be mainly characterized for this; that is, whose government would be distinguished…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20Antiochus III’s successor was his son Seleucus IV Philopater, who ruled from 187 to 175 BC. Heliodorus tried to steal from the temple in Jerusalem but was stopped by divine intervention (see 2 Maccabees 3:1–40). Heliodorus murdered Seleucus after a short seven-year reign.Read the comment
