Context of Amos 8:3
1Then the Lord God showed another vision to me. I saw a basket with summer fruit in it. 2He asked me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ I answered him, ‘I see a basket of summer fruit.’ Then the Lord said to me, ‘The time has now come to punish my people. I will not forgive them any longer. On the day that I come to punish them, people will not sing in the temple. Instead they will weep loudly. There will be dead bodies everywhere. Be quiet now!’ That is what the Lord God says. 4So listen to me, you who are cruel to helpless people. You try to destroy people who are poor and weak. 5You say to yourselves, ‘We want the new moon festival to finish so that we can sell food again. We want our Sabbath day of rest to finish so that we can sell grain.’ But when you sell things, you cheat the people who buy from you. You deceive them with false weights, and you make the price too high.

Commentaries on Amos 8:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3The songs of the temple - Instead of שירות shiroth, songs, Houbigant reads שורות shoroth, the singing women; and Newcome follows him: "And the singing women of the palace shall howl in that day." Instead of joyous songs, they shall have nothing but lamentation. They shall cast them forth with silence - Every place shall be filled with the dead, and a dreadful silence shall reign universally; the few that remain being afraid either to speak or complain, or…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3The songs of the temple shall be howlings - Literally, “shall howl.” It shall be, as when mirthful music is suddenly broken in upon, and, through the sudden agony of the singer, ends in a shriek or yell of misery. When sounds of joy are turned into wailing, all must be complete sorrow. They are not hushed only, but are turned into their opposite. Since Amos is speaking to, and of, Israel, “the temple” is, doubtless, here the great idol-temple at Bethel…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-14This section contains five visions. It is helpful to compare how these visions develop with the judgments listed earlier in Amos 4:6–11. The judgments listed there include: famine, drought, destruction of crops, plagues, and widespread destruction.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. songs of ... temple--(Am 5:23). The joyous hymns in the temple of Judah (or rather, in the Beth-el "royal temple," Am 7:13; for the allusion is to Israel, not Judah, throughout this chapter) shall be changed into "howlings." Grotius translates, "palace"; compare Am 6:5, as to the songs there. But Am 5:23, and Am 7:13, favor English Version. they shall cast them forth with silence--not as the Margin, "be silent." It is an adverb, "silently." There shall…Read the comment
