Context of 2 Samuel 18:29
27The man on the wall said, ‘The first man is running like Zadok's son, Ahimaaz.’ The king said, ‘He is a good man. I am sure that he brings good news.’ 28Then Ahimaaz shouted to the king, ‘All is well!’ He bent down low in front of the king, with his face towards the ground. He said, ‘Praise the Lord your God! He has put your enemies under your power. They turned against you, my lord the king, but they have lost the fight.’ The king asked, ‘Is the young man Absalom safe?’ Ahimaaz answered, ‘When Joab sent me, your servant, I saw that many people had come together. There was a lot of noise, but I do not know what was happening.’ 30The king said, ‘Stand over there and wait.’ So Ahimaaz moved away and he waited. 31Then the Ethiopian man arrived. He said, ‘My lord the king, listen to this good news! Today the Lord has helped you to win the fight. He has kept you safe from all the people who turned against you.’

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 18:29
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29I saw a great tumult - It was very probable that Ahimaaz did not know of the death of Absalom; he had seen the rout of his army, but did not know of his death. Others think he knew all, and told this untruth that he might not be the messenger of bad news to David.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-33Verses 19-33 By directing David to give God thanks for his victory, Ahimaaz prepared him for the news of his son's death. The more our hearts are fixed and enlarged, in thanksgiving to God for our mercies, the better disposed we shall be to bear with patience the afflictions mixed with them. Some think David's wish arose from concern about Absalom's everlasting state; but he rather seems to have spoken without due thought. He is to be blamed for showing…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28-29All is well! (Hebrew shalom [peace, safety, well-being]): David then asked, “Is the young man Ab-shalom shalom? (That is, “What about young Absalom? Is he all right?”) Even though Absalom had opposed him, he was still David’s son. David cared more about his son’s fate than about the well-being of the soldiers who had fought for him (2 Samuel 19:5–6).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 24-3224-32. David sat between the two gates--that is, in the tower-house on the wall that overhung the gate of Mahanaim. Near it was a watchtower, on which a sentinel was posted, as in times of war, to notify every occurrence. The delicacy of Ahimaaz' communication was made up by the unmistakable plainness of Cushi's. The death of Absalom was a heavy trial, and it is impossible not to sympathize with the outburst of feeling by which David showed that all…Read the comment
