Context of 2 Kings 14:19
17Joash's son Amaziah, the king of Judah, lived for 15 years after Jehoahaz's son Jehoash, the king of Israel, died. 18The other things that happened while Amaziah was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Judah's kings’. Some people in Jerusalem made a plan to kill Amaziah. So he ran away to Lachish. But the people in Jerusalem sent men to catch him in Lachish. They killed Amaziah there. 20They carried his dead body back to Jerusalem on a horse. They buried him there beside his ancestors in the City of David. 21All the people in Judah made Amaziah's son Azariah king instead of his father. Azariah was 16 years old.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19They made a conspiracy against him - His defeat by Jehoash, and the consequent pillaging of the temple, and emptying the royal exchequer, and the dismantling of Jerusalem, had made him exceedingly unpopular; so that probably the whole of the last fifteen years of his life were a series of troubles and distresses.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-22Verses 15-22 Amaziah survived his conqueror fifteen years. He was slain by his own subjects. Azariah, or Uzziah, seems to have been very young when his father was slain. Though the years of his reign are reckoned from that event, he was not fully made king till eleven years afterwards.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20Like his father Joash (2 Kings 12:20–21), Amaziah was killed by assassins. Lachish, southwest of Jerusalem, was where King Sennacherib of Assyria won a key battle during his invasion of Judah in 701 BC (2 Kings 18:14). - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 19-2019-20. they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem--Amaziah's apostasy (2Ch 25:27) was followed by a general maladministration, especially the disastrous issue of the war with Israel. The ruinous condition of Jerusalem, the plunder of the temple, and the loss of their children who were taken as hostages [2Ki 14:13, 14], lost him the respect and attachment not of the grandees only, but of his subjects generally, who were in rebellion. The king fled in…Read the comment
