Context of 2 Kings 14:19
17Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18The rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? Now a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem, and Amaziah fled [south] to Lachish; but they sent [men] after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20Then they carried him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the City of David. 21And all the people of Judah took Azariah, who was [only] sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19They made a conspiracy against him - His defeat by Jehoash, and the consequent pillaging of the temple, and emptying the royal exchequer, and the dismantling of Jerusalem, had made him exceedingly unpopular; so that probably the whole of the last fifteen years of his life were a series of troubles and distresses.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-22Verses 15-22 Amaziah survived his conqueror fifteen years. He was slain by his own subjects. Azariah, or Uzziah, seems to have been very young when his father was slain. Though the years of his reign are reckoned from that event, he was not fully made king till eleven years afterwards.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20Like his father Joash (2 Kings 12:20–21), Amaziah was killed by assassins. The writer of Chronicles says his lack of faith led to the plot against him (2 Chronicles 25:27). Lachish, southwest of Jerusalem, was where King Sennacherib of Assyria won a key battle during his invasion of Judah in 701 BC (2 Kings 18:14). - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 19-2019-20. they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem--Amaziah's apostasy (2Ch 25:27) was followed by a general maladministration, especially the disastrous issue of the war with Israel. The ruinous condition of Jerusalem, the plunder of the temple, and the loss of their children who were taken as hostages [2Ki 14:13, 14], lost him the respect and attachment not of the grandees only, but of his subjects generally, who were in rebellion. The king fled in…Read the comment
