Context of 2 Chronicles 13:20
18Judah's soldiers trusted the Lord, the God of their ancestors, to help them. That was why they won the battle that day against Israel's army. 19King Abijah chased King Jeroboam. He took these Israelite towns for himself: Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, as well as the villages around them. After that, while Abijah was Judah's king, Jeroboam never became strong again. Finally, the Lord punished Jeroboam so that he died. 21But Abijah became more powerful. He married 14 wives. He became the father of 22 sons and 16 daughters. 22All the other things that happened while Abijah ruled as king are written in the book of the prophet Iddo. It includes the things that Abijah did and the things that he said.

Commentaries on 2 Chronicles 13:20
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20The Lord struck him, and he died - Who died? Abijah or Jeroboam? Some think it was Jeroboam; some, that it was Abijah. Both rabbins and Christians are divided on this point; nor is it yet settled. The prevailing opinion is that Jeroboam is meant, who was struck then with that disease of which he died about two years after; for he did not die till two years after Abijah: see 1 Kings 14:20; 1 Kings 15:9. It seems as if Jeroboam was meant, not Abijah.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Jeroboam‘s death was a judgment upon him for his sins. Chronologically speaking, his death is here out of place, for he outlived Abijah at least two years (compare the marginal reference and 1 Kings 15:9); but the writer, not intending to recur to his history, is naturally led to carry it on to its termination.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20Jeroboam lived longer than Abijah (see 1 Kings 15:9). The account of his death appears with his defeat, which was common for defeated warriors (see 2 Kings 19:37).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2020. Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah--The disastrous action at Zemaraim, which caused the loss of the flower and chivalry of his army, broke his spirits and crippled his power. the Lord struck him, and he died--that is, Jeroboam. He lived, indeed, two years after the death of Abijah (1Ki 14:20; 15:9). But he had been threatened with great calamities upon himself and his house, and it is apparently to the execution of these…Read the comment
