13I say this because God made Adam first. Then he made Eve.
1 Timothy 2:13 in other versions
Context of 1 Timothy 2:13
11When you meet together, a woman should learn quietly. She must respect the leaders who teach in the church. 12I do not let a woman teach men. I do not let a woman have authority over men. Instead, she should listen quietly. I say this because God made Adam first. Then he made Eve. 14It was Eve, not Adam, who believed the lies that Satan told her. Because she believed Satan completely, she did what God had said was wrong. 15But even as women give birth to children, God will save them. They must continue to trust God and to love other people. They must live in a way that shows they belong to God. They must think carefully about how they live. Then God will save them.

Commentaries on 1 Timothy 2:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve - And by this very act God designed that he should have the pre-eminence. God fitted man, by the robust construction of his body, to live a public life, to contend with difficulties, and to be capable of great exertions. The structure of woman's body plainly proves that she was never designed for those exertions required in public life. In this the chief part of the natural inferiority of woman is to be sought.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve - The apostle, in this verse, and the following, gives reasons why a woman should occupy a subordinate situation, and not usurp authority. The first is, that she was second in the act of creation, or was made subsequent to man. The reason here assigned cannot be understood to be merely that of priority of existence - for then it would give every old person authority over a younger one; but it must refer to the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-15Verses 8-15 Under the gospel, prayer is not to be confined to any one particular house of prayer, but men must pray every where. We must pray in our closets, pray in our families, pray at our meals, pray when we are on journeys, and pray in the solemn assemblies, whether more public or private. We must pray in charity; without wrath, or malice, or anger at any person. We must pray in faith, without doubting, and without disputing. Women who profess the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13The common view of this verse is that Paul thinks social roles come from man being created first (Genesis 2:7, 22; 1 Corinthians 11:8–12). People often link Paul's reasoning to the leading role of the firstborn son in the Old Testament. However, there are exceptions to the firstborn rule in Scripture (see Genesis 27–28). While the New Testament retains gender differences, it also promotes equality in Christ (Galatians 3:28; see also 1 Corinthians…Read the comment
