Context of 1 Samuel 2:35
33One of your descendants may continue to serve me as a priest. But he will be very sad and his eyes will become weak. Anyone who is born in your family will die when they are young. 34This will show you that what I have said is true: Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will both die on the same day. I will choose another priest to serve me. He will be faithful. He will do everything that I want him to do. I will give him a strong family and he will serve my chosen king for ever. 36Everyone in your family who continues to live will have to bend down low to this priest. They will ask him for a few coins and a piece of bread. ‘Please let me help the priests so that I can have something to eat,’ they will say.” ’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 35A faithful priest - This seems to have been spoken of Zadok, who was anointed high priest in the room of Abiathar, the last descendant of the house of Eli; see 1 Kings 2:26, 1 Kings 2:27. Abiathar was removed because he had joined with Adonijah, who had got himself proclaimed king; see 1 Kings 1:7. I will build him a sure house - I will continue the priesthood in his family. He shall walk before mine Anointed - He shall minister before Solomon, and the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35Zadok is meant rather than Samuel. The High Priesthood continued in the direct descendants of Zadok as long as the monarchy lasted (see 1 Chronicles 6:8-15). Mine anointed - in its first sense obviously means the kings of Israel and Judah Psalm 89:20; Zechariah 4:14. But doubtless the use of the term MESSIAH ( ̀ Christos ) here and in 1 Samuel 2:10, is significant, and points to the Lord‘s Christ, in whom the royal and priestly offices are united…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-36Verses 27-36 Those who allow their children in any evil way, and do not use their authority to restrain and punish them, in effect honour them more than God. Let Eli's example excite parents earnestly to strive against the beginnings of wickedness, and to train up their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. In the midst of the sentence against the house of Eli, mercy is promised to Israel. God's work shall never fall to the ground for want…Read the comment
