Context of 1 Kings 8:16
14While all the Israelite people stood there, the king turned round towards them. He prayed that God would bless them. 15He said, ‘Praise the Lord, Israel's God, as he deserves. He has used his power to do what he promised to do for my father David. He told David, “I brought my people, the Israelites, out from Egypt. From that time, I have not chosen a city in any of Israel's tribes to build a temple where my people would worship me. Now I have chosen David to rule Israel, my people, as king.” 17My father David wanted very much to build a temple to give honour to the Lord, Israel's God. 18But the Lord said to my father David, “It was good that you wanted to build a temple to give me honour.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 8:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Since the day, etc. - Mention is here made, says Dr. Kennicott, of some one place and some one person preferred before all others; and the preference is that of Jerusalem to other places, and of David to other men. In consequence of this remark, we shall see the necessity of correcting this passage by its parallel in 2 Chronicles 6:5, 2 Chronicles 6:6, where the thirteen Hebrew words now lost in Kings are happily preserved. Let us compare the passages…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16The marginal reference completes the sense of this verse here. The passage is in accordance with archaic modes of speech, and is probably the more verbally accurate of the two.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 Solomon encouraged the priests, who were much astonished at the dark cloud. The dark dispensations of Providence should quicken us in fleeing for refuge to the hope of the gospel. Nothing can more reconcile us to them, than to consider what God has said, and to compare his word and works together. Whatever good we do, we must look on it as the performance of God's promise to us, not of our promises to him.Read the comment
