Context of 1 Kings 8:16
14Then the king turned around and blessed the whole assembly of Israel while they were standing. 15“Thanks be to the Lord God of Israel. With his mouth he made a promise to my father David; with his hand he carried it out. He said, ‘Ever since I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I didn’t choose any city in any of the tribes of Israel as a place to build a temple for my name. But now I’ve chosen David to rule my people Israel.’ 17“My father David had his heart set on building a temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel. 18However, the Lord said to my father David, ‘Since you had your heart set on building a temple for my name, your intentions were good.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 8:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Since the day, etc. - Mention is here made, says Dr. Kennicott, of some one place and some one person preferred before all others; and the preference is that of Jerusalem to other places, and of David to other men. In consequence of this remark, we shall see the necessity of correcting this passage by its parallel in 2 Chronicles 6:5, 2 Chronicles 6:6, where the thirteen Hebrew words now lost in Kings are happily preserved. Let us compare the passages…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16The marginal reference completes the sense of this verse here. The passage is in accordance with archaic modes of speech, and is probably the more verbally accurate of the two.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 Solomon encouraged the priests, who were much astonished at the dark cloud. The dark dispensations of Providence should quicken us in fleeing for refuge to the hope of the gospel.
