Context of 1 Kings 8:13
11The priests could not do their work to serve the Lord, because of the cloud. The Lord's bright glory filled his temple. 12Then Solomon prayed, ‘Lord, you have said that you live in a dark cloud. Now I have built a great temple for you. It is a place where you can live for ever.’ 14While all the Israelite people stood there, the king turned round towards them. He prayed that God would bless them. 15He said, ‘Praise the Lord, Israel's God, as he deserves. He has used his power to do what he promised to do for my father David.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-21Verses 12-21 Solomon encouraged the priests, who were much astonished at the dark cloud. The dark dispensations of Providence should quicken us in fleeing for refuge to the hope of the gospel. Nothing can more reconcile us to them, than to consider what God has said, and to compare his word and works together. Whatever good we do, we must look on it as the performance of God's promise to us, not of our promises to him.Read the comment

However, he knew that God could not be confined to a human-made temple (see 1 Kings 8:27). Solomon completed his task to build the temple (1 Kings 8:19; 1 Chronicles 28:10), trusting the promises that God would live in the sanctuary (see Exodus 15:17).Read the comment
