Context of 1 Kings 4:26
24Solomon ruled all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates river, from Tiphsah as far as Gaza. There was peace in all these places. 25While Solomon was alive, Judah and Israel were safe from their enemies. In the whole country, from Dan to Beersheba, every family had a place to live and they could grow food to eat. Solomon had places to keep 4,000 horses that pulled his chariots. He also had 12,000 horses. 27The 12 officers in each region supplied food for King Solomon and for everybody that ate in his palace. Each region supplied food for one month each year so that there was enough for everyone. 28Each officer also supplied barley and straw for the king's horses. They took the right amount to the different places where the horses lived.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses - and twelve thousand horsemen - In 2 Chronicles 9:25, instead of forty thousand stalls, we read four thousand; and even this number might be quite sufficient to hold horses for twelve thousand horsemen; for stalls and stables may be here synonymous. In 1 Kings 10:26; it is said he had one thousand four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; and this is the reading in 2 Chronicles 1:14. In 2 Chronicles…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26In 2 Chronicles 9:25, the number of stalls for Solomon‘s chariot horses is stated at 4,000, instead of 40,000. The number in the present passage is probably a corruption. Solomon‘s chariots were but 1,400 1 Kings 10:26; 2 Chronicles 1:14, for which 40,000 horses could not possibly be required. The Assyrian chariots had at most three horses apiece, while some had only two. 4,000 horses would supply the full team of three to 1,200, and the smaller team of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-28Verses 20-28 Never did the crown of Israel shine so bright, as when Solomon wore it. He had peace on all sides. Herein, his kingdom was a type of the Messiah's; for to Him it is promised that he shall have the heathen for his inheritance, and that princes shall worship him. The spiritual peace, and joy, and holy security, of all the faithful subjects of the Lord Jesus, were typified by that of Israel. The kingdom of God is not, as Solomon's was, meat and…Read the comment

To prepare for battles, Solomon built towns to house his forces (1 Kings 9:19).Read the comment
