Context of 1 Kings 22:49
47At this time there was no king who ruled Edom. Their ruler was an officer that King Jehoshaphat had chosen. 48Jehoshaphat built some big ships to bring back gold from Ophir. But they never left Ezion-Geber because a storm destroyed them. So they never travelled anywhere. At that time, Ahab's son Ahaziah said to Jehoshaphat, ‘Let my sailors join with your sailors on the ships.’ But Jehoshaphat refused. 50Jehoshaphat died and they buried him beside his ancestors in the City of David, his ancestor. Jehoshaphat's son Jehoram became king after him. 51When Jehoshaphat had ruled Judah for 17 years, Ahab's son Ahaziah became the king of Israel in Samaria. Ahaziah ruled Israel as king for two years.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:49
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 49But Jehoshaphat would not - It appears from the above cited place in Chronicles that Jehoshaphat did join in making and sending ships to Tharshish, and it is possible that what is here said is spoken of a second expedition, in which Jehoshaphat would not join Ahaziah. But instead of אבה ולא velo abah, "he would not," perhaps we should read אבה ולו velo abah, "he consented to him;" two words pronounced exactly in the same way, and differing but in one…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 492 Chronicles 20:35-36, explains that the two kings conjointly built the fleet with which the Ophir trade (1 Kings 9:28 note) was to be re-opened. Ahaziah had thus an interest in the ships; and when they were wrecked, attributing, as it would seem, the calamity to the unskillfulness of his ally‘s mariners, he proposed that the fleet should be manned in part by Israelite sailors - men probably accustomed to the sea, perhaps trained at Tyre. This proposal…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 41-50Verses 41-50 Jehoshaphat's reign appears to have been one of the best, both as to piety and prosperity. He pleased God, and God blessed him.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 48-49Jehoshaphat built a fleet of trading ships with Ahaziah (see 2 Chronicles 20:35–37). Like Solomon, they planned to send ships to Ophir for gold (1 Kings 9:27–28; 10:11). But the plan failed. To fulfill a prophetic warning (2 Chronicles 20:37), the Lord destroyed the fleet before it left port. Jehoshaphat wisely refused to join with Ahaziah again. Ezion-geber was Solomon’s port city on the Gulf of Aqaba (1 Kings 9:26).Read the comment
