Context of 1 Corinthians 15:55
53That has to happen. Our bodies that are becoming spoiled must change. They must change into bodies that never become spoiled. Our bodies that are dying must change into bodies that will never die. 54God will give us new bodies like that. When that happens, what is written in the Bible will become true. It says: ‘God has won against death. He has destroyed it completely!’ ‘Death, you can no longer win! Death, you no longer have any power to hurt us!’ 56Death only has power to hurt us because of our sins. And it is the authority of God's Law that gives power to sins. 57But now we thank God! Because of our Lord Jesus Christ, we win against death and its power.

O grave, where is thy victory? - , , · , ̔ͅ, · These words are generally supposed to be taken from Hosea 13:14, where the Hebrew text stands thus: שאול קטבך אהי מות דבריך אהי ehi debareyca maueth ; ehikatabca sheol : which we translate, O death! I will be thy plagues; O grave! I will be thy destruction; and which the Septuagint translate very nearly as the apostle, ̔ , ; , ̔ͅ ; O death, where is thy revenge, or judicial…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 55“O death.” This triumphant exclamation is the commencement of the fourth division of the chapter, the practical consequences of the doctrine. It is such an exclamation as every man with right feelings will be disposed to make, who contemplates the ravages of death; who looks upon a world where in all forms he has reigned, and who then contemplates the glorious truth, that a complete and final triumph has been obtained over this great enemy of the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 51-58Verses 51-58 All the saints should not die, but all would be changed. In the gospel, many truths, before hidden in mystery, are made known. Death never shall appear in the regions to which our Lord will bear his risen saints. Therefore let us seek the full assurance of faith and hope, that in the midst of pain, and in the prospect of death, we may think calmly on the horrors of the tomb; assured that our bodies will there sleep, and in the mean time our…Read the comment

Where is thy sting, O Hades? ... Sting" answers to the Hebrew "plagues," namely, a poisoned sting causing plagues. Appropriate, as to the old serpent (Ge 3:14, 15; Nu 21:6)…Read the comment
