Context of 1 Chronicles 9:22
20Eleazar's son Phinehas had been the leader of the guards at one time. The Lord was with Phinehas to help him. 21Meshelemiah's son Zechariah was also a guard at the entrance of the tent where the Lord met with his people. There were 212 guards for the gates of the temple. Their names were written in the lists of their ancestors, for each village where they lived. King David and the prophet Samuel had chosen their ancestors to do this important work as guards. 23Those men and their descendants had to stand as guards at the gates of the Lord's Holy Place, which had been a special tent. 24The guards stood on the four sides of the Lord's house: the east, west, north and south sides.

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 9:22
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22The porters, like the singers Nehemiah 12:29, dwelt for the most part in the villages round Jerusalem. They were the descendants of those originally selected for the work by David. David‘s arrangements are here regarded as having had the sanction of Samuel - which would imply that he planned them in the lifetime of Saul, while he was still a fugitive and an outlaw.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-34The Chronicler explains how people and institutions returning from the exile in Babylon connected with the past. The Levites and priests are important in this summary of Israel. The Chronicler believes they were central to the nation's organization. They were vital to Israel's success as a nation with God as king. The Chronicler used ancient records from Moses and David (1 Chronicles 9:19–22) to describe each group's homeland and rank.Read the comment
