Context of 1 Chronicles 9:22
20(Phinehas, Eleazar’s son, had been the official in charge of the gatekeepers, and the Lord was with him.) 21Zechariah, son of Meshelemiah, was the keeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting. The men chosen to be gatekeepers at the entrances totaled 212. Their genealogies were recorded in their villages. David and the seer Samuel appointed them to these positions because they were trustworthy. 23So they and their descendants were assigned to be gatekeepers for the Lord’s house, that is, the tent. 24The gatekeepers were on the four sides (east, west, north, and south).

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 9:22
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22The porters, like the singers Nehemiah 12:29, dwelt for the most part in the villages round Jerusalem. They were the descendants of those originally selected for the work by David. David‘s arrangements are here regarded as having had the sanction of Samuel - which would imply that he planned them in the lifetime of Saul, while he was still a fugitive and an outlaw.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-34The Chronicler explains how people and institutions returning from the exile in Babylon connected with the past. The Levites and priests are important in this summary of Israel. The Chronicler believes they were central to the nation's organization. They were vital to Israel's success as a nation with God as king. The Chronicler used ancient records from Moses and David (1 Chronicles 9:19–22) to describe each group's homeland and rank.Read the comment
