Context of 1 Chronicles 9:26
24The guards stood on the four sides of the Lord's house: the east, west, north and south sides. 25Their relatives lived in their villages. They came to Jerusalem to help with the work as guards. Each time that they came, they worked there for seven days. There were four faithful Levite guards who led the work. They kept safe the rooms in God's house where they stored valuable things and money. 27They stayed at their places around God's house during each night. It was their work to keep it safe. Each morning they would use their key to open the gates. 28Some of the guards kept safe the valuable things that the priests used when they served the Lord. The guards counted those things when the priests brought them in. They counted them again when the priests took them out.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26Rather, “For the four chief porters, who were themselves Levites, were in trust, who also had the charge of the chambers, etc.” A contrast seems intended between the four chief porters, whose charge was constant, and the remainder, who kept watch by turns.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-34The Chronicler explains how people and institutions returning from the exile in Babylon connected with the past. The Levites and priests are important in this summary of Israel. The Chronicler believes they were central to the nation's organization. They were vital to Israel's success as a nation with God as king. The Chronicler used ancient records from Moses and David (1 Chronicles 9:19–22) to describe each group's homeland and rank.Read the comment
