Context of 1 Chronicles 16:22
20They travelled among different nations and different kingdoms. 21But the Lord did not let anyone hurt them. He punished kings, to keep his people safe. He said, ‘Do not even touch the people that I have chosen to be mine. Do not hurt my prophets.’ 23Sing to the Lord, all the world. Every day, tell people the message that he has rescued us. 24Tell the other nations that he is very great. Tell all of them about the great things that he has done.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Touch not mine anointed - By this title the patriarchs are generally understood: they had a regal and sacerdotal power in the order of God. In the behalf of the patriarchs God had often especially interfered: in behalf of Abraham, Genesis 12:17; Genesis 20:3; and of Jacob, Genesis 31:24; Genesis 34:26; Genesis 35:5. But the title may be applied to all the Jewish people, who were the anointed, as they were the elect and peculiar people of God. See on…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4-42Verses 4-42 This passage is interposed by the writer of Chronicles between two sentences of the parallel passage in Samuel. It contains a detailed account of the service which David instituted at this time, a service out of which grew the more elaborate service of the temple. The language of much of the passage is remarkably archaic, and there can be no reasonable doubt that it is in the main an extract from a record of the time of David. 1 Chronicles…Read the comment
