Context of Joel 1:16
14Hallow a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the elders, [and] all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah. 15Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come. Is not the food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17The seeds are rotten under their clods, the granaries are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered. 18How do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered, for they have no pasture; the flocks of sheep also are in suffering.

He sets it in detail before their eyes. “When the fruits of the earth were now ripe, the grain now calling for the reaper, and the grapes fully ripe and desiring to be pressed out, they were taken away, when set before their eyes for them to enjoy.” Yea, “joy and gladness from the house of our God.” The joy in the abundance of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-20Verses 14-20 The sorrow of the people is turned into repentance and humiliation before God.
