Context of Hosea 9:15
13Ephraim, as I saw [him], was a Tyre planted in a beautiful place; but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the slayer. 14Give them, Jehovah — what wilt thou give? — give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. All their wickedness is in Gilgal; for there I hated them: because of the wickedness of their doings, I will drive them out of my house, I will love them no more: all their princes are rebellious. 16Ephraim is smitten: their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit; yea, though they should bring forth, yet will I slay the beloved [fruit] of their womb. 17My God hath rejected them, because they hearkened not unto him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations.

For there I hated them - And therefore he determined, "for the wickedness of their doings, to drive them out of his house," so that they should cease to be a part of the heavenly family, either as sons or servants; for he would "love them no more," and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-17Verses 11-17 . God departs from a people, or from a person, when he withdraws his goodness and mercy from them; and when the Lord is departed, what can the creature do? Even though, for the present, good things seem to remain, yet the blessing is gone if God is gone. Even the children should perish with the parents. The Divine wrath dries up the root, and withers the fruit of all comforts; and the scattered Jews daily warn us to beware, lest we neglect or…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15All their evil appears at Gilgal: Gilgal was the base camp for Joshua’s army (Joshua 5:10; 10:6, 43) and the place where Saul became king (1 Samuel 11:15). Saul also disobeyed God and was rejected as king at Gilgal (1 Samuel 13:8–15; 15:10–23). Israel’s leaders, including its first king, led the nation away from their true king, the Lord.
