Context of Hosea 7:13
11And Ephraim is become like a silly dove without understanding: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. 12When they go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowl of the heavens; I will chastise them, according as their assembly hath heard. Woe unto them! for they have wandered from me; destruction unto them! for they have transgressed against me. And I would redeem them; but they speak lies against me. 14And they cried not unto me in their heart, when they howled upon their beds; they assemble themselves for corn and new wine; they have turned aside from me. 15I have indeed trained, I have strengthened their arms, but they imagine mischief against me.

Commentaries on Hosea 7:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Wo unto them! - They shall have wo, because they have fled from me. They shall have destruction, because they have transgressed against me. Though I have redeemed them - Out of Egypt; and given them the fullest proof of my love and power. Yet they have spoken lies against me - They have represented me as rigorous and cruel; and my service as painful and unprofitable.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Woe unto them, for they have fled from Me - The threatening rises in severity, as did the measure of their sin. Whereas “Salvation belonged to God” Psalm 3:8 alone, and they only “abide under His shadow” Psalm 91:1-2, who make Him their “refuge, woe” must needs come on them, who leave Him. “They forsake their own mercy” Jonah 2:8. “Woe” they draw upon themselves, who forget God; how much more then they, who willfully and with a high hand transgress…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-16Verses 8-16 Israel was as a cake not turned, half burnt and half dough, none of it fit for use; a mixture of idolatry and of the worship of Jehovah. There were tokens of approaching ruin, as grey hairs are of old age, but they noticed them not. The pride which leads to break the law of God leads to self-flattery. The mercy and grace of God are the only refuge to which obstinate sinners never think of fleeing. Though they may howl forth their terrors in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13Woe: The Hebrew word ’oy was used at funerals to mourn the dead. In God's eyes, Israel was as good as dead because they had rebelled against him. Rebelling against a human king was a capital crime. It was even more serious for God's people to rebel against their heavenly king. I would redeem them: This Hebrew word means paying a fee to bring back someone who has been enslaved. It is often linked to the exodus from Egypt. The Lord wanted to do for the…Read the comment
