Context of Ezekiel 16:61
59For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will even deal with thee as thou hast done, who hast despised the oath, and broken the covenant. 60Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. And thou shalt remember thy ways, and be confounded, when thou shalt receive thy sisters who are older than thou, together with those who are younger than thou; for I will give them unto thee for daughters, but not by virtue of thy covenant. 62And I will establish my covenant with thee, and thou shalt know that I [am] Jehovah; 63that thou mayest remember, and be ashamed, and no more open thy mouth because of thy confusion, when I forgive thee all that thou hast done, saith the Lord Jehovah.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 61Thy sisters, thine elder and thy younger - The Gentiles, who were before the Jews were called, and after the Jews were cast off, are here termed the elder and younger sister. These were to be given to Jerusalem for daughters; the latter should be converted to God by the ministry of men who should spring out of the Jewish Church. The former, who were patriarchs, etc., profited by the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world. Among the latter the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 59-63Verses 59-63 After a full warning of judgments, mercy is remembered, mercy is reserved. These closing verses are a precious promise, in part fulfilled at the return of the penitent and reformed Jews out of Babylon, but to have fuller accomplishment in gospel times. The Divine mercy should be powerful to melt our hearts into godly sorrow for sin. Nor will God ever leave the sinner to perish, who is humbled for his sins, and comes to trust in His mercy and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 59-63Jerusalem's sins were serious and required judgment. But judgment was not God's final word on Jerusalem. She had broken God's covenant in many ways. Because of this, she deserved the penalty of death. But judgment was not God’s final word. The Lord would remember the covenant he made with her at the beginning. His plans for his people could not be stopped, even by their sin. His covenant commitment lasts forever (Psalm 136). In the end, God would forgive…Read the comment
